Baby and Kiddy Bubbles

Babies naturally hold their breath underwater. This is due to the mammalian diving reflex which causes all mammals to intuitively hold their breath when submerged. That being said, your baby should be comfortable in the water. The more relaxed your child is, the more fun they’ll have and ultimately, this will lead to a greater quantity of quality shots. Your child should be able to make a minimum of 4-8 short submersions followed by a short break.

Submersions are typically no longer then 1-3 seconds (this varies with age). Just enough time for us to capture that eye wide wonder of being underwater! Confident babies are great photographic models. An easy way to build your babies confidence in the water is to take them for a bath and get them used to being submerged. We also encourage you to bring down some costumes to try out in the pool. For example; fairy dresses, tutus and uniforms.

Drown the Dress, Belly and Couple Bubbles

Having your photo taken underwater is definatly not a normal, everyday affair. To get the most out of your shoot we recommend that you read these few simple pointers.

Opening your eyes underwater is quite important to the success of your shoot.  Maybe try practicing in a bath to get the feel of it.

Don’t puff your cheeks out when underwater and holding your breath.
We do lots of small breath holds rather than a few long ones (so we don’t tire you out!). Breath holds are typically around 5 seconds.

Clothes are fine to be put into a pool. The chlorine is quite mild and wont damage them if there washed in freshwater after the shoot.  That being said, it’s advisable not bring clothes with stick on and loosely attached pieces i.e. sequins or patches as they may come loose.

The human lungs can contain around 4-6 litres of air. This air will keep you afloat if you hold your breath at the surface – imagine trying to sink with several balloons tied to you.  The best way to sink and get under the water for your photo is to breathe the air out of your lungs.  This will make you ‘negatively’ buoyant and will make it much easier for you to position yourself underwater, which in turn will lead to better photos.

The take home message from this – open your eyes, don’t puff your cheeks out and breathe out to sink!
